Veerle Nouwens is a Research Analyst at the International Security Studies Department of the Royal United Services Institute, focusing on geopolitical relations in the Asia-Pacific region. Her research interests include China’s foreign policy, maritime security and ASEAN. Prior to joining RUSI, Ms. Nouwens worked for the European External Action Service at the Delegation of the European Union to Singapore’s Political, Press and Information Section, where she focused on EU-Singapore bilateral relations and on Europe’s role in Southeast Asia. Veerle holds an MPhil in Modern Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford, and has attended semester programs at both Peking University and Tsinghua University.
Ms. Nouwens is particularly interested in the security relationships of Central Asian states with the rest of Asia. As a specialist in the geopolitics of the Asia-Pacific, the research conducted under SEnECA will help understand how foreign policy across Eurasia is developing. She will help co-lead part of SEnECA’s Work Package 2, with a focus on the political and security relations of Central Asian states with other regional partners in Asia.
